Positive Affirmation: March 2013

I am a wonderful woman who is constantly healing and growing to become stronger as each day goes by.” --Kiyanna Shanay’s positive affirmation

I went to an empowerment conference a few months ago designed by the Black Female Development Circle, an organization at my school created to uplift, educate, and empower women. I’m always looking for environments that focus on uplifting and empowering people so needless to say I loved it! The affirmation I made that day was from their self-esteem workshop.

My affirmation is a reminder to myself not to give up. I shouldn’t give up on my dreams. I shouldn’t give up on myself. Everyday I’m learning more about myself and I’m growing as a person. I’m beautiful. I’m wonderful and I’m worth whatever effort it takes to keep on going on.

My affirmation is a reminder to me that it’s okay to have bad days. It’s okay to take a personal day if things get too tough to handle. It’s an important part of my self-care.

My affirmation is a reminder to me that self-care is important. Taking care of myself is so important because if I don’t take care of myself than how will I be able to grow and to thrive?

My affirmation reminds me that I’m more than my past experience, my past downfalls, my rough days, my g.p.a., my grades, my fights, or my disappointments. I’m much more than that. I’m my own person who is learning from past mistakes and who in understanding more and more that mistakes are okay. We grow out of the darkness to rise again—and be better than we were before.

There is good in everyday. My positive affirmation is a reminder of that.

What should I do with my life?

“I think the purpose of life is to be useful, to be responsible, to be honorable, to be compassionate. It is after all, to matter: to count, to stand for something, to have made some difference that you lived at all.”
-Leo C. Rosten

What do you want to be when you grow up? Who would have every thought that would be such a hard question to answer? People have been asking me that question since I was about 5-years-old. My answer constantly changes but lately I’ve been feeling more pressured than ever to pick a career path. It’s almost time to start applying for grad school. I know what I want to do with my life I just don’t know how to go about it. I want to help people. I want to change their lives--make people feel safe and loved and happy. I want to talk to people. I want to appreciate all the beautiful people and things in this world. And I want to be loud about it. I want to share with people and have people share with me. I want to empower and inspire people. I want to be an advocate for myself and for others. I want to educate people. I also want to hug lots of people.

This is starting to sound like a children’s book. Which is something else I want to do—write children’s books.

I’ve been pretty set on finding social work masters programs for graduate school. I’m not 100% sure but that’s what makes the most sense to me right now. In my research, I found that you could possibly be a counselor with a Masters of Social Work. Counseling is along the lines of what I wanted to do during my senior year of high school and when I first got to college. I wanted to be a psychiatrist because I wanted to talk to people so that I could help them. At the same time, I wanted so much more than that so I changed my career paths a few dozen times after that.

I’m stuck on Social Work programs because they pretty closely match what I want to do. If you take all the mushiness out of dream job description, it pretty much screams something that sounds like social work, community development, non-profit work, or something like that. I just don’t know what but I social work seems like a great place to start. The only thing is, I look at many of the programs and their subprograms and concentrations and nothing really ever jumps out at me. It also just seems like they narrow it down so that you have to do one thing for the rest of your life. Why pay so much money just for one career option? I want many options. I want to do many things. I’m determined to touch many lives and I don’t think a narrowed focus in one field will help me with that but I don’t want to not miss out on any chance I can get to help people and I know in this day and age I need some kind of degree on my wall for me to be allowed to help anyone. I guess I’m looking for something with my exact description but since that won’t happen, I guess I’m feeling pretty lost. That really only means that I need to do some more research. Any suggestions?

What happened to me was not my fault

This wonderful woman is Staceyann Chin. She's a poet, performer, and activist. Her performances are so powerful. I'm sharing this clip of one of her memorable performances because I think this message is incredibly important for women. Remember to be proud of who you are. Love all parts of yourself because there is no one else out there like you. Be the epitome of your name and your soul. No one can be a greater you. Be that great person that you deserve to be. Anything that has happened to you in the past that has shaken you was not your fault. What someone else did in hope to cut you down was not your fault. The person who violated you was in the wrong. What happened to you was not your fault.

I wish every woman had the pen, the clear view and the support she needs to scream: WHAT HAPPENED TO ME WAS NOT MY FAULT

Your Rights: Safe Places & Self-Care

I want to share this with you just as a reminder that safe places are important. It's important to be in an environment where you are comfortable to express yourself and your feelings. If someone makes you feel like less of a person when you try to be your self or express your feelings then they are not providing you with safe place. They may not be doing it on purpose but it happens so you just have to be on the look out for people who may be bringing you down. That way, you're taking care of yourself. You should never feel belittled for talking about what's important to you.
When you're in a situation like this, it's hard to figure out what to do. You might not want to eliminate them completely from your life so what do you do? I think when you have someone in your life that is providing a high amount of toxic energy but you can't separate yourself there are a few things you can do.
  • Try to avoid topics that result in conversations that can hurt you and further damage your relationship. If you're struggling with body issues and this person is constantly policing your body, then try not to have conversations about your body with them.
  • Let them know that certain things that they say bother you. If someone tells you to just "cheer up" when you're feeling depressed, tell them why that's not okay. Tell them that when they say things like this to you, it hurts you because it makes it seem like the depression you feel is something simple that can just be fixed by changing your facial expression.
  • Focus on the positives. Try to ignore any negatives that they may be sending and vent later if you need to.
  • Most importantly, remember that you are enough. You're a beautiful and wonderful person. No one can ever change that.

I found this link of a list of Your Legitimate Rights. Keep these in mind when you're struggling.
  1. You have a right to need things from others.
  2. You have a right to put yourself first sometimes.
  3. You have a right to feel and express your emotions or your pain.
  4. You have a right to be the final judge of your beliefs and accept them as legitimate.
  5. You have the right to your opinions and convictions.
  6. You have the right to your experience - even if it’s different from that of other people.
  7. You have a right to protest any treatment or criticism that feels bad to you.
  8. You have a right to negotiate for change.
  9. You have a right to ask for help, emotional support, or anything else you need (even though you may not always get it).
  10. You have a right to say no; saying no doesn’t make you bad or selfish.
  11. You have a right not to justify yourself to others.
  12. You have a right not to take responsibility for someone else’s problem.
  13. You have a right to choose not to respond to a situation.
  14. You have a right, sometimes, to inconvenience or disappoint others.

Vote No on 6!

(The Great Mia and Myself Letting Voters Know the Deal)
"Vote as if your life depends on it."

Newsflash: It does. It did and the way things are looking, it will. I had the amazing opportunity to stand up for women's health and reproductive rights. I volunteered with the Feminist Majority on the "No On 6" campaign against Amendment 6. If Amendment 6 had passed, it would place restrictions on access for women to abortion and would have deleted a right to privacy clause from the Florida constitution.  Thankfully it didn't pass. I don't believe that there should be any limitations on the decisions people make over their own bodies.

I was able to work with some amazing people during this campaign and I got to talk to a lot of people. What I've learned about volunteering with campaigns is that not every one is going to be on the same page with you and there's nothing wrong with that. You can't change everyone's mind. The goal is to let people know why this is important to you and to all of the people that are impacted by the issue and hope that they make the best decision. Not everyone will have a peaceful and calm conversation with you but I learned that you can't let those people get you down. I had to decide in those situations that I was not letting anyone keep me from standing up for what I think is right!

While volunteering I was able to talk to voters while tabling on campus and phone-banking. The above photo was taken on campus near one of the polling centers. We high-fived so many voters that day. I was only able to phone bank once for a short period of time but it was a real memorable hour of calling voters. A lot of us phone banking spoke to at least one older woman who had already seen this fight for reproductive rights and could not understand why it's something that's still being voted on. I spoke to several older women who sent me good thoughts and praises for fighting the good fight. Messages like those encouraged me to keep going and made it easier to deal with people who aren't so nice over the phone.

This was a great experience for me--one of the best from this last semester. I believed I grew as a person seeing how my small contributions can really make a difference.

Fall Semester = Over

I made it! This semester wasn't as hard on me as my spring semester but I'm glad that I made it through. The last two weeks were pretty rough but it looks like I made it! I'm actually really proud of myself for this semester. It's not like I got straight A's or anything but I really do feel like I'm growing as a person and as a student. I handled my battles this semester very well. I was able to better balance my academics and my social life while still getting the hang of taking care of myself. I got work done. I experienced new things and I put myself out there. I'm trying my best to make sure that I continue to do that.

I'm getting closer and closer to graduation so I'm finding that school demands a lot more of my attention and commitment. I'm learning to prepare myself for life in the real world. It's scary but it's also exciting and frightening.

This past semester, I tried to take advantage of every opportunity that allowed me to do what I love. I spent a lot of time standing up for what I believe in while also building my resume and gaining experiences that will help me later in life when I'm helping others. I've felt really empowered doing what I love and knowing that I'm helping people. By standing up for what I believe in and what I know is good, I've been standing up for people whose voices need to be heard. I know that I still have some more growing to do. I'm still healing and finding myself but I think I'm getting better at this whole "calm and carrying on human" thing. I see what I want to do and I'm taking steps toward that. I'm going to write about some of my experiences from this past semester individually but I wanted to quickly list the amazing things that I feel empowered me this semester.
  • Coalition to End Rape Culture
  • Fitsmi Internship
  • No On 6 Campaign
  • Volunteering for the Obama campaign
  • LGBT History Month internship
  • Community Service

I'm learning more and more that if  focus on what I love without losing sight of the reality of my school work and how it relates, I can keep afloat. I can make a difference. My Women's and Gender Studies major reminds me of the importance of activism and advocacy and I'm finding ways to incorporate those things into my daily life and it's keeping my heart happy. I like that.

Food for Thought

My lovely friend Lauren occasionally posts "food for thought" prompts on her blog. This prompt was, "write a letter to a person who has had a bad day."

For you, with love:
I want you to know that you're so much more than what you're going through right now. How you're feeling today does not define you. You're more than this day. Take a deep breath. I can't change that today was tough but here are some things I want you to remember. You matter. You will survive this. You're alive. You matter. I'm glad you're alive. I'm happy that you're still here. Today won't last forever.
Sometimes were sent bad days so that we appreciate the good days. Some people say that it's always darkest before the dawn. My favorite quote to get me through those harder days is "Be strong now because things will get better. It might be stormy now but it can't rain forever." This song also helps me a lot. Beautiful Flower by India Arie.
I hope this helps. If not, it's okay to take a break. Sit down. Don't forget to take care of yourself. Do a little bit of what makes you happy. Indulge in something special. You deserve love. You deserve something special. You're worth it.
I'm always here if you need to talk. Please remember that.
Stay Strong♥

Happy Friday!!

It's finally Friday and I could not be happier. I've been super busy this week. I had two papers due at the beginning of the week, I was working on the campaign, I volunteered at the polls, I was all over the place so I'm really looking forward to relaxing this weekend. Here is what's been keeping my happy this week:

  • I finished both of my papers on time! They haven't been graded yet but I know that I won't be getting any points off for late work
  • I volunteered at a polling location on Election day with the USF Feminist Majority workers. We were advocating a vote "no" on a certain amendment but we were also mainly encouraging people to go vote. We were also helping people find their correct polling locations telling them what they needed to have before they were allowed to vote.
  • I volunteered for the Barack Obama for America campaign. I love talking to people and meeting friendly people, especially when they're excited about exercising their right to vote. It's a beautiful thing. I spoke to students on campus, handed out posters and buttons, and I called voters in different states. Calling jobs are tricky. People don't like it when you call them. Especially if you're calling to campaign for the candidate that they don't want or if you're calling during dinner. I have experience with cranky callers and I was really excited because of what I was doing so I didn't really mind the rude people. They tone it down when you continue to be kind and respectful. It pays to be nice.
  • I'm an intern at fitsmi.com and we've had a lot of new members join so that's really exciting! I got to welcome them all to the wonderful fitsmi community and I really hope that they can find a home there. It's really a great website to visit.
  • President Barack Obama was re-elected. I couldn't be happier.
  • On election night, Tammy Baldwin became the first openly gay person to ever be elected to Senate. Mazie Hirono became the first Asian American woman to be elected to Senate. Tammy Duckworth became the first female disabled veteran to be elected to the House of Representatives. Mary Gonzalez became the first openly pansexual person to be elected to Senate. There are more firsts that happened with this election and they all are reminders that who we are matters and what defines us can't hold us back. We can do great things. You can do great things. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise!
  • It's getting colder here in Florida. It feels amazing. I love this time of year! Cold weather means it's getting closer to the holidays and that means no school and that means more times to spend time with family! Love it!
  • As always, my family and friends!
I think that this week left me feeling inspired and empowered. I got a lot of good out of this week but it has also taken all of my energy. I also learned a lot about myself during this week. I learned what it means to stand up for what I believe in on a larger scale than I ever have before. This week left me feeling like I've made a difference in my life and the lives of others.

I hope you had a good week and that your weekend is even better! Love you lots! :) ♥

I know I am strong

Disney has released a video called "I am a Princess." The purpose is to celebrate real life princess that don't fit into the mold that Disney has been presenting to us over the last 50 years. I think that this video more so focuses on being yourself, standing up for yourself, and standing up for others. There is a strong focus on love in this video and while it is still pretty "girly," we all know that love is neither a feminine or masculine trait. It's just love. I think it's pretty empowering. There's a lot more we can do to empower our younger generation but this is definitely a step in the right direction.

“I am a Princess. I am brave sometimes, I am scared sometimes. Sometimes I am brave even when I am scared. I believe in loyalty and trust. I believe loyalty is built on trust. I try to be kind, I try to be generous. I am kind even when others are not so generous. I am a Princess. I think standing up for myself is important. I think standing up for others is more important, but standing with others is most important. I am a Princess. I believe compassion makes me strong. Kindness is power. And family is the tightest bond of all. I have heard I am beautiful, I know I am strong. I am a Princess. Long may I reign.”

Honor and Empowerment

A few days ago, I had the honor of hearing President Barack Obama speak. He came to Tampa and I was able to get a last minute ticket. It was an incredible experience! I don't think I will ever forget that day! This is the first presidential election that I will be able to vote in and I'm so excited. This election goes beyond the two candidates that we've been hearing about. I've been volunteering and talking to a lot of people about the importance of voting. Our voices must be heard! I've learned that it's okay to want and to love to stand up for what I believe in. I've always known of the importance of believing in myself and it's something that I think I have to work on every day but standing up for myself while also standing up for others has made me feel so empowered lately. I love it!

Holiday Help

Help for the holidays:
  • Don't listen to those family members who only go on about how you've "let yourself go" or tell you "how big you are now" or that "you need to eat because you're too thin" etc. It's your body and it's none of their business. All sizes are beautiful and fat is not an insult anyway. Remember that you're beautiful, always. Some people are beautiful and fat. Some people are beautiful and skinny. No big deal. The holidays are no place for body policing.
  • Ignore the implications that your career choice/college major is not going to help you in the future. It's your life and because it's your life, it's wonderful. Unless they can see into the future, it's a moo point.
  • When people bug you about settling down and dating, remember they have no business in your love life.
  • Enjoy all the food you want to enjoy
  • Be thankful
  • Smile
  • Hug
  • Fill conversations with love and good things. There is no need for hate during the holidays
  • Remember that you are strong and you are special. Don't let hurtful words get you down. You're important. You are enough
  • Stay strong
  • Stay beautiful
  • Know that there are places to vent.
got any more tips? I would love to hear them.
